The problem
Authentic happiness (enduring well-being) erodes when it is left to instinct instead of method.
You were taught the moves piecemeal, never the whole model.

The model
- 01Voluntary Positive Interventions
- 02Genetic Set Range for Happiness
- 03Life Circumstances
- 04Positive Emotion
- 05Gratification and Flow
- 06Authentic Happiness (Enduring Well-Being)
- 07Meaning and Purpose

Step 1 of 5 · Voluntary Positive Interventions
You control roughly the 'V' portion of happiness, and it is the one worth investing effort in.
Misconception
Practitioners believe these interventions are feel-good affirmations whose gains fade within days, like any mood boost.
Reality
The durable interventions do not manufacture pleasant feelings directly; they change what you attend to, how you interpret events, and how your days are structured, which is why gratitude letters and strengths recrafting outlast a chocolate bar.

Step 2 of 5 · Genetic Set Range for Happiness
Your genetic baseline is a range you can move within, not a fixed dot you are stuck on.
Misconception
People assume the genetic set point means happiness is fixed at birth and interventions are pointless.
Reality
The set range is a range, not a point, and it governs the return-to-baseline pull after events — it constrains your ceiling and floor but leaves substantial room within them for voluntary practices to move you.

Step 3 of 5 · Life Circumstances
External circumstances account for a small and often temporary share of enduring happiness.
Misconception
Practitioners believe that improving objective circumstances — a raise, a bigger house, better weather — is the reliable path to lasting happiness.
Reality
Once basic needs are met, most circumstances explain a strikingly small fraction of happiness variance because you adapt to them quickly; the exceptions worth pursuing are rich social relationships and, for many, faith.

Step 4 of 5 · Positive Emotion
Positive emotion has three independent time zones, each with its own intervention.
Misconception
People assume positive emotion is a single dial and that maximizing present pleasures will raise the whole.
Reality
Positive emotion splits by time orientation, and these are largely independent — you can savor the present while stewing over the past, so each zone needs its own intervention (gratitude for the past, disputation for the future, savoring for the present).

Step 5 of 5 · Gratification and Flow
Flow requires a challenge that stretches your skill, not a comfortable or passive task.
Misconception
Practitioners believe relaxing and consuming enjoyable content (streaming, scrolling, snacking) is how you refuel and feel good.
Reality
Gratifications feel effortful in the moment and offer no immediate emotional buzz, yet they build lasting well-being — while passive pleasures deliver a shallow spike and can leave you depleted, which is why absorbed challenge outperforms rest for satisfaction.
